What This Coin Looks Like (Obverse, Reverse, Mint Mark Location, Special Features, etc.):
1855/54 Seated Liberty Half Dollar - 5 Over 4 Repunched Date RPD Error
One major variety is the 1855/54 Seated Liberty Half Dollar which features a repunched date (RPD) error. This coin features an 1855 date struck over an 1854 date which resulted in small parts of the underlying 1854 date appearing within and around the 1855 date. The easiest way to identify this coin is to notice a line through the middle of the last "5" - the line being part of the underlying "4". All of the numbers "854" are slightly doubled with the first "5" being very subtly doubled and the "8" being even more subtly doubled as well - both much more difficult to spot. These tiny features are depicted by the arrows in the example image above.
