1825 Capped Bust Gold $5 Half Eagle : 5 Over Partial 4

What This Coin Looks Like (Obverse, Reverse, Mint Mark Location, Special Features, etc.):

One major variety is the 1825/4/1 $5 Gold Capped Bust Half Eagle. There are a few aliases for this variety - sometimes it is known as the 1825/1 (historical standard) or the "5 Over Partial 4" (newer standard). All of these describe the same BD-1 variety. It turns out that this is actually a die that was leftover in 1821 and was overdated with 1824 - but was not used in 1824. It was finally overdated a second time in 1825 - so it's 1825 over 1824 over 1821! (1825/4/1). The resulting underlying digit looks like a "1" and other experts said it looks like a partially effaced "4" - so there was confusion for a number of years. (It is easily distinguishable from the ultra-rare 1825/4 BD-2 variety - which features a very clear underlying "4" digit).
