1867 Shield Nickel With Rays Early US Mint Nickel Post Civil War Type 1 Rays on Reverse Nickel Alloy Extremely Fine to almost uncirculated condition.
There were 28,890,500 coins minted. Only 2,019,00 were minted with rays. The composition is a nickel alloy made of 75% copper and 25% nickel. The shield nickel with rays were only minted in 1886 and 1887. The US Mint had problems striking the coin with rays on the reverse, as the dies would crack and break prematurely trying to force the details of the rays into the die. They decided to remove the rays 1867 mid year. There were far more coins struck without the rays than with rays, making this a coin that is rare and sought after by collectors. This is a perfect gift for a collector trying to complete an album collection, or a great addition to any coin collection!
