USA Coin Book Item ID Number:
1880-CC NGC AU53 half eagle $5 gold, SCARCE w/ lots of luster & great eye appeal. here's another fantastic Carson City issue, and another one difficult to find in upper grades and unmolested! what a beauty she is with a lot more mint luster than normally seen on a coin of this grade. it has a strong strike and pretty honey gold color, a really nice mid-grade AU. finding an eye appealing piece took years for a coin we thought would be easier to find, but quality is always hard to find in something as popular and widely collected as Carson City memorabilia, especially coins with the CC mint mark on it. out of the original mintage of only 51,000 very few have survived and many aren't nearly as pretty as this one. NGC has graded only 26 in this grade and only 318 pieces graded in all grades combined in their 30 years in the grading business but many of those are resubmissions fishing for a higher grade and profit to the submitters. stack these numbers and the Carson City popularity up against any 1916-D dime or gem BU 1909-S VDB cent for relative rarity and sheer value. NGC lists this coin at $3250.00 in AU53 and you can add $2500 more for a AU55. this is a premium piece, at the top of the grade or a push to the next grade up in our humble opinions. please see the photos- they are of the exact coin the buyer will receive.
