Numismatic research indicates that the most probable cause of this is that most of the 1895-S dollars probably were mothballed in mint vaults right after they were minted and then they sat there. Then Uncle Sam decided to help John Bull (Great Britain) cover a shortage of silver coins in British India. This led to millions of stockpiled Morgan Dollars getting consigned to Helen Smelter. So most of the 1895-S dollars were melted. Then when you look at what's out there to buy you notice quickly that this date usually doesn't come very nice.
