Struck in accordance with legislation passed by Congress and signed by the President on December 1, 1997.
This coin was produced by the Department of the Treasury, US Mint to commemorate the historic first flight of Orville & Wilbur Wright in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on December 17, 1903.
Was only available for sale from August 1, 2003 to July 31, 2004. The proof and uncirculated versions were both produced at the Philadelphia Mint and sold individually.
The obverse of the half dollar features Wright Monument located at Kill Devil Hill near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The inscriptions on the coin include “Liberty”, “In God We Trust”, “Wright Monument”, and the date “2003″. This obverse design is the work of John Mercanti.
The reverse features an the Wright 1903 Flyer making it historic first powered manned flight. Orville Wright is aboard the Flyer with Wilbur running on the ground below. The inscriptions include “United States of America”, “E Pluribus Unum”, and “Half Dollar”. The reverse was designed by Norman E. Nemeth.
This 2003 First Flight Half Dollar Proof is in its original government packaging from the US Mint, including the US Mint Certificate of Authenticity.
