Hard Times tokens were privately issued, large cent sized tokens produced during the period of 1833-1844. These pieces were often used as vehicles for political and/or satirical commentary on the events of the day. This one depicts Andrew Jackson in a crate, with a bag of money in one hand and a sword in the other. Some historical context can be found here (scroll down about 2/3 of the way):
