1822 Capped Bust Half Dollar Varieties - Difference and Comparison
There were two major varieties of the 1822 Capped Bust Half Dollar. The most common variety is simply the "Normal Date" variety which depicts no major errors or special features - as depicted above. The other major variety is the 1822/1 overdate error which features an 1822 date stuck over an 1821 date in the die - which resulted in a "2" over "1" on the coins. Parts of the underlying "1" can be seen between the base and center of the "2" on the right side as depicted by the upper-right arrow below. The easiest way to identify this coin is to note how the last "2" is much thicker and bolder than the first "2" in the date - particularly the base and the curl on the tip of the "2" is much thicker.
