What This Coin Looks Like (Obverse, Reverse, Mint Mark Location, Special Features, etc.):
1798 Draped Bust Silver Dollar - Pointed 9 - Close Date - High 8
One major variety of the 1798 Draped Bust Silver Dollar features a Pointed 9 on the obverse of the coin and a closely spaced date - but with the 8 being aligned higher relative to the rest of the numbers. This variety is depicted above.

There were two major style varieties of the "9" in the 1798 date. One variety features a knob on the lower curl of the 9 and the other variety features a pointed end with no knob. The difference between the knob 9 vs pointed 9 is depicted below in the example comparison image:

1798

The "close date" (or narrow date) features numbers that are spaced closely together whereas the "wide date" features more widely spaced numbers. One way to identify this variety is to notice that the wide date features the "8" very close to the drapery on the lady liberty portrait - the number almost touches it. The "8" is much further away from the liberty. The difference between the 1798 close date vs wide date is depicted below in the example comparison image:

There are also two major varieties of the "close date" type. One features a normal "8" and the other features a high "8". The Normal 8 is more closely level and aligned with the rest of the numbers in the 1798 date. The High 8 is noticeably aligned much higher up relative to the rest of the numbers - and is very easy to identify. The difference between the close date normal 8 vs high 8 is depicted below in the example comparison image:
