The 1795 $5 Gold Turban Head Half Eagle (Large Heraldic Eagle) is the first of the "Large Eagle" variety $5 gold coins. This coin is dated 1795 but was actually struck sometime in 1797 or 1798 from unused obverse dies from 1795 with the newer large eagle reverse dies. The original coins struck in 1795 feature a "Small Eagle" on the reverse whereas the newer design features a larger heraldic eagle on the reverse of the coin.
