1846 Liberty Head $5 Gold Half Eagle Varieties - Five Dollars - Large Date vs Small Date
There were two major varieties of the 1846 $5 gold half eagle. One variety features a large date while the other features a smaller date. It can sometimes be difficult to distinguish the varieties - but one way to do it is to note the number "4" in the 1846 date. The Large Date has less spacing to the right and left of the number "4" and all of the numbers are slightly larger. The Small Date has much more spacing between the number "4" and the rest of the numbers - which are also slightly smaller in size. The difference between the 1846 Large Date vs Small Date $5 Liberty Head Gold Half Eagle is depicted above in the example comparison image.
