What This Coin Looks Like (Obverse, Reverse, Mint Mark Location, Special Features, etc.): There were two major varieties of the 1850 $10 Gold Eagle. The "Small Date" variety features smaller numbers in the 1850 date while the other "Large Date" variety features larger and taller numbers in the date. The small date is slightly rarer and more valuable. It is fairly easy to distinguish the number size difference between the varieties. The difference between the 1850 $10 Large Date vs Small Date is depicted above in the example comparison image. Note how in the Large Date variety - the number "1" is closer to the left-hand side of the liberty bust compared to the Small Date. Source of example image is courtesy of Heritage Auction Galleries.
