This is a replica/reproduction of an 1838 Gobrecht Dollar, that is marked 'COPY' on the reverse. The Gobrecht Dollars were minted in Philadelphia from 1836 to 1839. In 1838, it is believed that the dollars struck were pattern issues. They displayed a reeded edge and medal alignment on the reverse. They did not display the designers initials on the obverse, had stars on the obverse but no stars on the reverse. This particular specimen dated 1838 but has a PLAIN edge. It is unknown just how many dollars were actually minted in 1838. This is a way of owning a replica of this rare denomination for filling a spot in a collection, or for educational purposes.
