1878-S Morgan Silver Dollar PCGS MS62 Great Toning! Very Clean Cheek & Fields on Both Obverse & Reverse I am not one to whine about grades from PCGS/NGC, but I firmly believe 62 Seems Low! The natural thick toning and muted luster as a result of the thick mottled type toning have to be what PCGS caused to hold the grade down on this coin. I suppose I should have followed the masses and dunked it in E-Z est or MS70 before submitting it, but I am someone who appreciates and collects original skin and patina. It's a shame that we get rewarded for dipped, bright "new" looking coins. I can assure you had I caved in and dipped this coin before submitting it, this would be in a 64 holder Yes - toning can hide blemishes. That's very true. I have studied this coin for hours with the naked eye, as well as with 2x, 5x and 20x loupes. There is one small reed mark on the cheek which is very small (2 ticks long)., and a couple other very tiny ticks. There are no cuts, blemishes, hairlines or any other distractions. First 3 images are PCGS True View images. The remaining images are my amateur shots from my iPhone with the last 3 photos being BEFORE coin was submitted to PCGS. The middle photos are purposeful closeups of the obverse half quadrant and reverse half quadrant to demonstrate how clean the fields and cheek are! Muted luster and natural toning cost this coin a least 2 points! The luster is muted but full and the toning is up to the owner to decide if they love or hate. Personally, I love it, but it certainly won't be for everyone. Coin is being priced at 63+ money Fresh Coin never on eBay before - I know as I submitted these coins in early October 2021, got them back mid-January 2022 and am listing them now for the first time |
