1882-CC PCGS XF40 $5 gold half eagle **MUST SEE** looks more like AU50, mistake? very strong break-out candidate here but we'll leave that decision to the next owner, we collect nice coins not slabs. in our humble but very experienced opinion this is a full AU by today's grading standards. was this just a clerical error? the coin has the typical flat strike for the year and maybe that was the reason for the hard grade? please see the photos and decide for yourself. we own hundreds of PCGS and NGC slabbed half eagles to compare this to and it really surprised us when we saw it, looks more like AU50 to AU53 in our humble opinions. with only 82,817 minted this is another scarce issue from the Carson City mint. we'd personally guage this one at the lower end of the AU scale, a very nice golden orange color with plenty of luster as you can see in the photos. PCGS has graded only 23 in this grade and only 385 in all grades combined in their 30 years in existence and keep in mind that many of those were broken out of their slabs and resubmitted for a better grade and profit, so the true number is probably much less than the number stated. stack rarity like this up against 1916-D dimes, gem MS65 1909-S VDB cents or even 1893-S Morgans and it becomes clear how underpriced the half eagle series really is. throw away the price guides and compare value for value in other series and then you'll see why we think this series is sooooo undervalued. we passed on a couple of AU pieces when we bought this and we paid a hefty premium for it when purchased because it is what it is, slab and professional opinion or not. we were glad we didn't pass on the opportunity to add it to our collection, it served us well and stood tall beside a lot of our PCGS and NGC AU coins. please see the photographs, they are of the exact coin that the buyer will receive.
