The minting of cents at Philadelphia dropped off rapidly during 1921, as the huge numbers struck during the previous five years proved quite sufficient to meet current demand during this recession year. Most of this production from both the Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints occurred during January-March, with sporadic supplemental minting in July and November.

In keeping with the restricted budgets imposed on all government agencies during the 1920s, the dies were used well past their ideal service, and poorly struck 1921(P) cents are common (the coin illustrated is an exception). Ironically, one feature was sharper during this year than any other in the series: Brenner's initials were hand reinforced on 1921's master die and are quite bold.

Unlike most Philadelphia Mint cents, this date is a bit scarce in fully red gem condition. Worn examples are plentiful.
