The Buffalo Nickel is a rare item for beginning, and even novice collectors. Buffalo Nickels have the Indian Head on the obverse side and on the reverse side of the coin is a bison everyone refers to as the buffalo. The first year the Buffalo Nickels was made was in the early 1900s starting at 1913. The creator James Earle Fraser made two distinct designs. The first nickel shows a bison on a mound and the second buffalo nickels were made with thin, straight lines on the base. Fraser tehn made three variations of Native American coins. You will find is initial below the date on the coins usually unless they are worn. According to researchers Fraser made the Bison to model the "Black Diamond." which is located in New York at the Central Park Zoo.
