Canada “Victory Nickel Of 1943-1945″ and Its Story
However, what’s unique about the Victory 5 cent piece Canada coin is that all around the end of the inside rim on the V side were tiny, raised dots and bars, not seen on any other Canadian coin. These engraved dots and dashes are actually Morse Code. However, many thought that the dots and dashes were simply design. The dots and dashes spell out the good-luck, war efforts words:
“We Win When We Work Willingly”
This is a 12-sided Canada Victory 5-cent Piece. It was first introduced on January 1, 1943. The year 1943 coin was yellowish-brown and made from an alloy called tombac consisting of 88% copper and 12% zinc.
Some 1944 and 1945 "V" nickel blanks missed the final chrome plating, and are referred to as "no chrome" examples. Since they do have the nickel plating, their color is no different than solid nickel 5 cent coins of other years, but they do have the steel cores.
