1959-P - Type-2 Reverse Franklin Half
In 1958 & 1959 Proof Reverse Dies were used to mint some Business-Strike Franklin Halves. The Proof Reverse coins (Type 2) have a high relief eagle with three large distinct wing-tips nearly touching on both the left & right of the perch. The eagle’s neck feathers are well defined & the eagle has a flat hooked beak.
Business-Strike Dies produced coins with a Low Relief Eagle with four wing-tip feathers right & left of the perch, & a curved beak.
For 1959 it is estimated that 20% of coins are the Low Relief Type 1 Variety, and 70% have the Type 2 Proof Style (High Relief) Eagle. The 1958 Type 2 Proof Reverse variety is very difficult to find & some estimate that less than 10% have the Type 2 High Relief Eagle.
