Description
For a third year, the United States Mint issued Special Mint Sets in lieu of the typical annual Proof Sets and Mint Sets. The 1967 Special Mint Set contained five coins struck with a high quality finish and placed within a rigid plastic holder.
Each set contained the 1967 Kennedy Half Dollar, which was struck in a composition of 40% silver. The set also contained a Washington Quarter and Roosevelt Dime struck in the recently introduced copper-nickel clad composition. Lastly, the 1967-dated Jefferson Nickel and Lincoln Cent included in the set were struck in their traditional composition.
As with the prior years, the special mint set coins were produced at the San Francisco Mint but do not contain a mint mark. The use of mint marks had been suspended in response to a nationwide shortage of coinage, which was blamed partly on coin collectors.
