As the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty approached in the 1980s, this great icon of freedom stood worn and weary. An ambitious grass-roots program was launched to fund repairs, so that the beloved landmark would be fully restored for the 1986 centennial celebration. As part of this effort, the U.S. Mint issued limited-edition 1986 commemorative half dollars.
