Here is a type set of 1883 Nickels, history in 4 coins!
In the first part of 1883 that Shield nickel was the existing type, it was replaced with the Liberty type, however the denomination of the nickel was not part of the design (no cents type). "Racketeers" took advantage of this flaw because the $5 Gold Liberty Head shared the same design as the nickel. The "racketeers" gold plated the nickels and passed them off as the gold pieces. Of course, this caused a big problem. Later in 1883, the nickel was redesigned to include the word "cents" on the reverse. The Liberty Head nickel, "with cents", remained in production until 1913.
Hope you enjoy this bit of history with these 4 coins.
