Proof Lincoln cents are special, collector-grade coins struck by the U.S. Mint using polished dies and specially prepared planchets. They are distinguished by highly reflective, mirror-like backgrounds and sharp, frosted designs. They generally retail anywhere from a few dollars to tens of thousands depending on the year and rarity.
The production and style of proof Lincolns have evolved dramatically since they were first introduced in 1909:

Matte Proofs (1909–1916): The earliest proofs featured a distinct sandblasted, grainy texture rather than a shiny mirror finish. These had low mintages (often under 3,000 per year) and are highly sought after by collectors today.

Brilliant Proofs (1936–1942, 1950–1964): The Mint resumed proof coin production in 1936, shifting to a highly polished, brilliant finish with cameo effects. Proof sets were suspended during World War II but resumed in 1950 and were struck in Philadelphia until 1964.

San Francisco Proofs (1968–Present): After a three-year pause (1965–1967), proof striking resumed in 1968 and permanently moved to the San Francisco Mint. Modern proof cents are easily recognized by their prominent "S" mint mark.
