Complete Original Roll BU 1959 Washington Quarters - All 40 coins have Type "B" Reverse.

This auction is for one complete roll, $10 face value, or 40 coins, of 1959 90% Silver Washington Quarters, of which all 40 coins have a Type B reverse.

Please note, pictures 14 and 15, are of the entire hoard of 46 BU / uncirculated quarter rolls that this roll was found in. The seller of this board had these 46 rolls in a safe since they 1970s

Please also note, pictures 12. 13, are a side by side comparison of a type A and type B reverse. The quarters with the type A reverse are NOT for sale in this auction and are used for demonstration purposes only

Pictures 6 & 7 are the toned "end of roll coin"

Pictures 12-13 are the demo of type B vs type A reverse

Pictures 14-15 are from the entire lot of 46 rolls I purchased as the original hoard of BU Quarter rolls

Pictures 16. 17, 18 are the NGC pride guide and auction results from sales of 1959 quarters (type A and B inclusive)

No other rolls or individual coins had any type B reverse quarters within. All of the rolls were dated 1958 to 1964 with the exception of one roll dated 1954-S.

I purchased 46 rolls of uncirculated quarters that had been in someone's safe for the last 45+ years . While they were all in tubes, these were quite obviously original and not assembled rolls. The tape on the rolls is all yellow faded brittle and cracked. The tubes are not from this era. The coins themselves all have the same patina (within a tube) and the edges all match .And most tubes had one or two coins with end of roll toning.

The type B reverse was designed for proof strike quarters 1956-1964. Some of the hubs ended up being used on some business strikes in Philadelphia. Of them all the 1956 are considered downright rare. All type B reverses on any date are very scarce. More information can be found in the Cherrypickers Guide.

PCGS price guide lists 1959 type B reverse graded MS67 as $1650 and MS66 as $400 (66+ is $1100).
At PCGS, only 33 have been graded MS67, and 11 have graded 67+. None finer (zero graded 68 or better). I would never sit here and say that any of these will grade 67 or 67+.
I do think there's a legitimate chance a few of these possibly could make 66 or better wishful thinking I know "¦). But, when looking closely under a 20 Power loupe, several of these have virtually flawless surfaces and booming original mint luster.
The NGC price guide (images attached) only show 1959 quarter as a whole. Type A and Type B reverses are grouped into the same price guide.
However when looking at the most recent auction results, one will note significant price disparity in sales.
The coins with the significant higher sell price, are all the type B reverse.
See attached graphs.
These sell so infrequently, the dates of some of the auctions go back as far as 2014.
Looking at the first table, the this auction results from 1959 quarters that graded MS
65.
The four most recent actions were 2019 back through 2014
These coins sold for $35, $60 and $84, and $85. 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2019.
The two coins to sell in the 80+ dollar range, had the Type B reverse.
Looking at the 2nd diagram, these are the MS66 and MS66+ auction results.
A little more recent, the last 4 sales of MS66 are 2017-2020, and the 4 most recent 66+ sales are 2015-2020
Looking at the 66 row, one sold for $43. The other 3 sold for $129, $138 and $192.
Sure enough, when following the links on each of the sales, the coin that sold for $43 was a type A reverse and the other three were type B reverse
Looking at the MS66+ row, the four recent sales are $164, $216, $329 and $900. The last coin, the $900 sale, was a type B reverse.
Clearly if one or two coins grade MS66 or 66+ that pays for most of the roll by itself and of course that's not a guarantee but looking at the quality of these coins I would be shocked if they were not a few of them
If you want to get really ambitious and look at the last diagram those are the MS67 graded 1959 quarters, most recent auction sales.
The 4 lots sold for :
$456, $552, $5520, and $6000
And the one coin grading 67+ that went to auction, sold for $9600. Obviously if 1 of the 40 coins were to grade 67, it's a home run.
Of course we all know the only three guarantees in life or death taxes and unpredictable grading at PCGS & NGC

NO RETURNS ON BULLION (due to the ever changing and volatile spot metals market). Unless roll MISREPRESENTED or I make an ERROR of some sort.
