1838-O Capped Bust Half Dollar, 'COPY' Stamped on Reverse

This is a replica of the 1838-O Capped Bust Half Dollar that is marked 'COPY' on the reverse. In 1838 and 1839, the Capped Bust Half Dollar design was changed from a reverse that said 50 CENTS to one that read HALF DOL. In addition, the lettered edge was changed to a reeded edge. 1938 marked the first year that a branch mint minted the half dollar. The mint mark was displayed on the obverse in 1838 and 1839. Only 20 specimens were minted by the New Orleans Mint in 1838. This is a way of owning a replica of this rare coin for filling a spot in a collection, or for educational purposes.
