1874 NGC XF $5 gold half eagle ~VERY RARE~ 3,488 mintage, ONLY 54 IN ALL GRADES! another really nice specimen of this very difficult to find rarity. it has attractive straw gold color and mild luster and fit in well with our AU-uncirculated set. it has a lot of detail and the eye appeal is very good for a lightly circulated coin. this is a VERY RARE date with a super low mintage of only 3,488 and super low population numbers, two good reasons to sock it away or fill that empty hole in your collection. these low mintage dates are beginning to gain the respect they deserve as true rarities because they circulated so widely that there are very few left, and what is left is not in very good condition compared to other series. just how rare is this? well, NGC's online census shows that they have graded only 3 pieces in XF40 and just 54 pieces in all grades combined in their entire thirty years in the grading business! the scholars and experts agree that there are less than 100 known to exist, in all grades, in the entire world- stack that up against any 'common' 1909-S VDB gem cent, 1916-D dime or 1916 quarter! RARE RARE RARE. the price guides are so far off on these rare dates that you can't trust them so do some research if you want to know the truth about just how rare they are. watch for more of old rarer half eagles- we've upgraded many dates in our set and wish to get rid of the extras, there are some very scarce dates coming. please see the photos for details and any issues that might bother you.
