1883 Hawaii Quarter - PCGS Certified AU-58
KM 5, one year type coin. Minted at the San Francisco Mint, for the Kingdom of Hawaii. Quarter dollar size silver coin .900 Silver, with King Kalakaua on the obverse.
The original mintage was 500,000 pieces, however over $824,000 in Hawaiian 1883 coinage was melted by the U. S. government after Hawaii was annexed in 1898, including over half of the mintage of the 25 cent coins. There were two additional melts which totaled over $32,000 face value of Hawaiian coins, without a breakdown by denomination, and there was a major fire in Hawaii, in which a significant amount of Hawaiian coinage is believed to have been destroyed in the residential buildings. It is estimated that no more than 220,000 quarter dollar coins survived. Be aware there are many counterfeit and cleaned Hawaiian Coins out there, this coin has been verified and graded by PCGS.
