1893 P Indian Head Penny

Here is an 1893 P Indian Head Penny that has been submitted to PCGS for restoration and received a grade of VF 35, almost good enough to justify a designation as an EF. In examining the date on this coin, it seems that it is an example of the RPD FS-301, however this may be just wishful thinking on my part. Nevertheless, what I see is a slight doubling of the "8" on its east side and it also appears that the "9" has doubling on its east side. While I believe that doubling exists, it is likely that the re-stamp was almost right on top of the original. In that case, one will have a hard time convincing any agency that this is truly an FS-301. Thus, I will leave to someone else the effort of convincing a certifying agency of this since the value of the coin would not go up significantly (to around $50) and the cost would be almost that much. Regarding the coin in general, it is interesting to note that, unlike many coins, the front of this coin aligns almost perfectly with the reverse. PCGS (July/August 2021) indicates that a VF 35 coin would be worth $16 and, while USACoinbook warrants that if you were to purchase a VF 20 coin from a dealer that you would pay about $8.91, they also indicate that an EF 40 coin would sell for about $16. However, you can have this graded coin for only $15 (plus shipping).

This item is a part of a liquidation sale currently in progress and is priced to sell. Retirement looms and with no one else in the family interested in this pastime, it is time to find new homes for all of my coins.
