Within days of the Lincoln Cent's initial release a decision was made to remove the designer's initials V.D.B. Nearly three times as many 1909 Lincoln Cents were coined without the initials, yet the public made no particular effort to save these, as it assumed the earlier issue would be the rare one.

While 1909 plain cents are certainly not rare in Mint State, the supply of gem pieces is noticeably smaller than for the 1909 V.D.B. cents.

There are no notable varieties, but close examination reveals that the reverse rim on this second emission is in lower relief. This unheralded change was prompted by reports of the 1909 V.D.B. cents stacking higher than an equal number of Indian Head Cents
