1918/17-S Standing Liberty Quarter PCGS VF Details Tooled

1918/17-S Standing Liberty Quarter PCGS VF Details Tooled. Very nice coin with strong detail, and a nice, natural looking patina.

Aside from the 1916, this infamous 20th Centurty Rarity is considered the Key to the Business Strike Standing Liberty Quarter Series./Set.

This Coin, Having a Beautiful Original Skin, was Never in Doubt or Concern about it coming back Cleaned.  What was of Concern were the small scratches beneath and just to the right of the eagle on the reverse. I believe if there was just 1, or maybe 2, it's possible the coin would have been "straight graded", but there is a small series of a few of these marks which leads one to believe someone was probably trying to scrape some gunk or some sort of dirt of the coin once upon a time.

Quite unfortunate, as this coin was identified as being a rarity as early as the early 1920s! It did not take long for word to get out within a couple years after being minted, to look for these valuable mint errors/varieties in your change.

It is now estimated that a few hundred 1918/17-S Standing Liberty Quarters survive today, including those in all grades combined. Mint State specimens are rare, and those with fully struck heads (MS FH) are extremely scarce.

Checking the last 5 years of Sales from Heritage Auctions, Great Collections and other Auction platforms, several VF Details Coins have sold, ranging from $2200 to $3400 with the last one being sold in 2024 from what I could find.

There were also many VG or XF Details Coins that sold for between $1800 and $4900 respectively.

Straight Graded VF examples ranged from as low as $3200 (VF20 in NGC and ANACS holders) to as high as $5200 (one sold for over $6000 but that appeared to be an anomaly).

Excellent eye appeal on this example with crusty original surfaces. I believe had this coin straight graded it would have been a VF25, possibly a 30.

The last 4 pictures are the album from which this coin was pulled from and are not part of the sale.

This coin came from a recent acquisition of a complete album of Standing Liberty Quarters, missing only the 1916. The person who assembled the collection did so in the 1970s and 1980s, long before the internet, and before Third Party Grading. Many of the coins in this collection came from the Downtown Boston Coin Dealers and Jeweler Buildings such as JJ Teaparty, Skinners and Bowers & Merena. A lot of nice coins in this collection and if I told you what his total cost to assemble the whole thing was you probably wouldn't believe me. The collection included the Over Date (1918/7-S) which, as of the time of this listing, has just been graded at PCGS and is en route back to me. The last 3 pictures are the album from which this coin was pulled from and are not part of the sale.
