Fully struck with full cartwheel original mint luster and at least 75% original red patina remaining, this is one of the nicer 1931-D we have handled. Lincoln Cent specialists know that while this coin's sister coin minted in 1931 in San Francisco is a true key date with a mintage of only 866,000 pieces, the Denver minted Lincoln Cent from 1931 becomes tougher to find in Red & Brown or Red in grades of Choice Brilliant Uncirculated and above. Many collectors and non collectors during the Great Depression knew to seek and find the 1931-S, while investors hoarded original rolls. While the mintage of the 1931 D was five times more (4,480,000 coins struck) than the 1931-S, many were struck on worn dies, very few original rolls were saved and collectors from that era were not privy to methods of preventing their Lincolns from toning to brown.
