The 1955 D nickel is generally superior to its Philadelphia Mint cousin, but that's about the only nice thing that can be said. Many were coined from worn dies, though they typically have better luster and more pleasing planchets than 1955(P) nickels. Coins with 5FS are very scarce, and 6FS examples are exceedingly rare.

From the 1950s through 1970 the quality of all Jefferson Nickels was compromised by a combination of erosion of the master hubs and the U. S. Mint's ever-growing emphasis on quantity over quality in circulating coinage.
