1963 Washington Quarter Type B Reverse Brilliant Uncirculated

This is a 1963 Washington quarter in Brilliant Uncirculated (MS63 or better) condition. It has the Type B reverse. The Type A reverse is the normal reverse for the quarters of this year. The Type B reverse is the reverse that was used for the proof dies of this era. After the Type B dies were used to strike proofs, some of them were then used to strike circulation strike coins. Since there were differences between the circulation die design and the proof die design, it created two different P-Mint varieties for the reverse of the 1963 circulation strike coins. The easiest way to tell the difference between the two varieties is by looking at the spacing between the lower E and S of STATES. On the Type A (circulation design) coins the lower E and S are nearly touching while on the Type B (proof design) reverses they are very well separated. The difference can easily be seen in the accompanying photos. The Type B (proof design) circulation strike coins can be found for all years from 1956 through 1964. For all of these years the Type B reverse coins are far scarcer than the normal Type A reverse coins. Breen documented these varieties in his reference "The Complete Encyclopedia of U.S. and Colonial Coins" and it is listed in The Cherrypickers’ Guide to Rare Die Varieties as FS-25-1963-901.  While it is listed in the CPG at $125.00 for MS63 coins, a quick check at Ebay shows that they are selling for a more realistic price of $19.95 to $24.95 and they are selling!  Satisfaction guaranteed.
