The Mexican Silver Libertad is not sold in the same numbers as some of its major counterparts, and it is the world’s oldest silver bullion coin program. Introduced in 1982, the Mexican Silver Libertads debuted four years before the American Silver Eagle, six years before the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf, seven years before the Chinese Silver Panda, and eight years before the Australian Silver Kookaburra.
It is produced by the National Mint of Mexico in San Luis Potosi. Coins including the Libertad have been struck there for more than four centuries. The initial Mexican coins that were created were actually based on numerous other currencies, including the US dollar, Japanese Yen, and even the Chinese Yuan. Everything from the peso to the Spanish dollar has been produced at this mint, which was originally located in Mexcio City.
