The Song Dynasty was a period of great stability and economic growth for
China. Many technological advances of global significance were introduced by the Song, including gunpowder, paper banknotes as a national currency and a compass with a true north. Cash coins, designed to be strung into large bunches on strings, with their almost unchanged 2000-year-old basic design, are emblematic of the idea of continuity in Chinese history.Contact between China and Europe had largely been broken since the Roman era. However in 1081, Chinese records indicate that Shenzong received a diplomatic mission from the Byzantine emperor, Michael VII Doukas.
Emperor Huizong’s reign saw the Song disastrously loose northern China to Jurchen invaders, the founders of the Jin Dynasty. In his early life, he had been an accomplished painter, poet, calligrapher and musician, many of works survive until to this day, but he also tragically neglected his military. Following his capture by the Jurchen, he and his son, who briefly succeeded him, died humiliating deaths in captivity.
