The mintage figure of 100,000 dimes for calendar year 1822 is too high given the scarcity of this date, and it also seems unlikely that the single die pair known for 1822 dimes could produce so many pieces. The inevitable conclusion one must draw is that much of this mintage was actually dated 1821, a not unusual circumstance at the U. S. Mint before the mid-1830s.

This date is scarce across all grades, with the vast majority of survivors being heavily worn and damaged to varying degrees. Mint State pieces, and even those grading better than Fine, are very rare and highly sought.

The 1822 Dime is a very popular date because of its small mintage. However, this date is even rarer than its small mintage figure suggests because other dates (such as 1809 and 1811) have smaller mintages, yet collectors do not consider those dates as valuable as the 1822. A quick peek into the PCGS Population Report shows that PCGS has certified fewer 1822 Dimes than any other date in the series. In Mint State, no other Capped Bust Dime date is as rare as the 1822.
