Here is a 1951-S Jefferson Nickel with an average strike for the date. It has full luster and a minimal amount of contact marks and therefore makes GEM (MS-65). Now this coin may not have the strike detail of other GEM coins in the surrounding dates such as 47-D, 48-D, and 50-D but do not forget that 1951-S is notorious in the series for having been generally poorly struck. On Monticello only the top step has any detail and it is not full but that is to be expected when you notice that the mintmark is softly struck.
