• In 1970, Congress authorized the General Services Administration (henceforth called the GSA) to sell to the public nearly three million Morgan Silver Dollars held in Treasury Department vaults. The GSA is an agency of the federal government that oversees the purchase, supply, operation, and maintenance of federal property, buildings, and equipment. The GSA is also responsible for the sale of surplus matter.
• Many of the original boxes and cases have been destroyed as coins were sent to grading services; nevertheless, these GSA coins in original holders can still be found with a little searching.
• From 1972 to 1980 the General Services Administration (GSA) sold a group of Uncirculated Carson City Morgan dollars that was discovered in Treasury vaults. Each coin was sealed in a special slab-like plastic case.
