Although the Philadelphia Mint struck nearly seven million Morgan dollars in 1901, few have survived to today in high grade. Silver dollars did not circulate much on the east coast, so it is likely that many bags of this date were simply lost to the Pittman Act melting of silver dollars during WWI. Due to the destruction of many of the bags of 1901 Morgans, this date is one of the absolute rarest dates in high grade. In fact, NGC has only graded a total of three examples in gem! (9/2016)
