1943-D Washington Quarter Doubled Die Obverse (DDO). Brilliant Uncirculated Details Grade. This popular variety can be found on page 178 in the Cherrypickers' Guide 5th Edition Volume 2, and is indexed as FS-25-1943D-101. The "flaw" as to why PCGS would not give this quarter a straight numerical grade is they claim the coin has a "wheel mark" as noted on the insert inside the slab. Any experienced numismatist (myself included) knows that a "wheel mark" is often times labeled as the "ring of death" in which is a large circular scratch around the outer periphery of the obverse or reverse as a result of being the "end of the roll" coin in a machine wrapped roll. What this quarter has IS NOT that. The only reason that I can see why this coin would have the defect of a "wheel mark" is the upper part of the letters RICA in the word AMERICA have a somewhat flattened appearance. Obverse doubling on this variety consists of strong doubling on the ear, hair curls, the chin, and the queue. Both the obverse and reverse have "blast white" surfaces. Although the attached photos make the obverse look like it is harshly cleaned on Washington's cheek, I can assure that is definitely NOT the case. Rather, the "lines" you see on Washington's cheek are very fine die polishing lines which is perfectly normal, and cannot be seen with the naked eye. I have been in this hobby long enough to know that this coin has definitely NOT been cleaned. If it were not for the "details" grade on this beautiful BU+++ quarter, I would feel confident that it would grade MS65 as Washington's forehead, neck, and cheek are absolutely free of any noticeable contact marks with a couple of small contact marks on the shoulder. On the reverse, there is a reliable "die marker"; that of a long die crack that extends from the rim by the letter Q of QUARTER all the way to the middle of the wreath above the "D" mintmark (see the Variety Vista website for pictures and description). Grading is subjective. As there is no numerical grade given for this coin, please examine the attached photos to formulate your own opinion in regard to grade.
In conclusion, here are the current market values for higher graded examples of this 1943-D quarter DDO variety as given on the PCGS website price guide as of this writing (12-13-2025): MS 65 $500.00, MS 64 $385.00, and MS 63 at $350.00. I consider the price I am asking for this 1943-D DDO quarter to be reasonable.
