The 1964 Proof ACCENTED HAIR Kennedy Half Dollar is actually the original design created by Gilroy Roberts. He showed this original design to the widowed First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Although she liked the overall design she suggested to Roberts that the coin would look better if President Kennedy's hair was less pronounced. Robert's quickly produced new master artwork that met her approval. Before the redesign was put in to production an estimated 100,000 proof coins had already been struck. The easiest way to identify the ACCENTED HAIR VARIETY is to look at the letter "I" in LIBERTY. If you do not see a lower left serif on "I" then your coin is the ACCENTED HAIR variety.
