There were two major varieties of the 1873 Three Cent Piece in regards to the style of the number "3" in the 1873 date. The open "3" is depicted above and has a narrower space between the two ends of the "3". In addition: The Open "3" is also closer to the liberty bust than the Closed "3" variety.
