What This Coin Looks Like (Obverse, Reverse, Mint Mark Location, Special Features, etc.): There were two major varieties of the 1811 $5 Gold Half Eagle. One variety features a small number "5" at the bottom of the reverse of the coin (as depicted above) while the other variety is known as the tall "5" variety which features a larger and taller 5. The difference between the 1811 Small 5 vs Tall 5 is depicted below in the example comparison image. Note the spacing between the "5" and "D" - how it is wider in the Tall 5 variety and narrower in the Small 5 variety. The bottom of the tall "5" nearly touches the rim of the coin as well:
