There were two major varieties of the 1834 $5 Gold Capped Bust Half Eagle. One variety featured a plain "4" with a straight horizontal edge on the right side of the number 4 - known as the Plain 4 variety. The Crosslet "4" variety features a vertical cross through the right side end of the "4".
