What This Coin Looks Like (Obverse, Reverse, Mint Mark Location, Special Features, etc.): There were two major varieties of the 1833 $5 Gold Capped Bust Half Eagle. One variety features a small 1833 date on the obverse of the coin (as depicted above - Source of example image is courtesy of PCGS). The difference between the Large Date vs Small Date is fairly easy to distinguish. The Large Date has numbers spread out more with more spacing between the numbers - whereas the Small Date has numbers closer together. This can easily be seen by the spacing between the number 3's. The style of the number "8" in the date is also very different - the inside bottom and top portion of the "8" is more narrow in the larger date and wider in the smaller date.
