One major variety of the 1847 $5 liberty head gold half eagle features an error with the 1847 date. This variety is knwon as the "Top of extra 7 at border" - which features the very top of the number "7" struck extremely low on the coin near the border. Small parts of the top of the 7 are just visible as depicted by the arrows in the example image above.
