1846-D/D Liberty Head $5 Gold Half Eagle - Five Dollars - High D Over D
One major variety is the 1846-D/D $5 gold half eagle which features a D over D RPM error. This variety is actually not rare compared to the normal 1846-D coin - it is still extremely valuable though. This variety features a "D" mint mark which was struck too high and then a second "D" mint mark struck lower into it's normal location. This is easily identified and is depicted below in the example close up image of the re-punched mint mark:
