What This Coin Looks Like (Obverse, Reverse, Mint Mark Location, Special Features, etc.):

There are two major varieties of the 1866 S Liberty Head Gold Half Eagle. This more common variety is known as the Type 2 "With Motto" reverse - which features the motto and banner "IN GOD WE TRUST" above the eagle on the reverse of the coin. This variety also has a much smaller "S" mint mark below the eagle. An example image of this design is depicted above.
