What This Coin Looks Like (Obverse, Reverse, Mint Mark Location, Special Features, etc.): One major variety of the 1798 Draped Bust Silver Dollar features a Pointed 9 on the obverse of the coin and a widely spaced date (wide date). This variety is depicted above.
There were two major style varieties of the "9" in the 1798 date. One variety features a knob on the lower curl of the 9 and the other variety features a pointed end with no knob. The difference between the knob 9 vs pointed 9 is depicted below in the example comparison image:
The "close date" (or narrow date) features numbers that are spaced closely together whereas the "wide date" features more widely spaced numbers. One way to identify this variety is to notice that the wide date features the "8" very close to the drapery on the lady liberty portrait - the number almost touches it.
