1830 Small 5D Capped Bust $5 Gold Half Eagle - Five Dollars
There were two major varieties of the 1830 $5 Gold Capped Bust Half Eagle. One variety is the "Small 5D" (depicted above) - which features a smaller number and letter "5 D." denomination at the bottom of the reverse of the coin. The other variety is known as the "Large 5D" - which has noticeably larger characters (especially the letter "D"). An example of the "Large 5D" is depicted below:

The Large 5D variety is known as BD-1 and only around 25-35 of these coins are known to exist. The Small 5D variety is known as BD-2 and only around 30-40 of these coins are known to exist. The values are practically the same for each variety and they are extremely valuable - but the "Small 5D" type is slightly more popular for collectors.
